Passion For Products-A Designer’s Life

Thankful for this rainy Saturday so I can catch up on life….seems like the past 28 years of growing Design Works International, our NYC based design studio, has been a non-stop labor of love…and on Monday August 1st we are officially in our new location at 494 8th Ave. (entrance on 35th street on the 12th floor)…phone number remains the 212-594-0777.
This labor of love is proud to acknowledge our amazing team of sales consultants, textile and graphic designers, interior specialists as well as trend, color and fabric liaisons.

Our new location is a state of the art “play house” for us and we could not be happier in our new home…even though it will take us a few weeks to finish the design details within the studio!

When we started out 28 years ago our focus was mostly in the fashion arena and today we are truly a lifestyle studio working with top brands, retailers and celebrities in both the fashion and home sectors.

Global Greats-Textile Treasures

It’s been non-stop trend travel the past six months both overseas as well as locally…Berlin, Paris, Cologne, New York City, Los Angeles, Frankfurt and London…Visiting design shows like Maison, Heimtextil, High Point Market,  Las Vegas Market and KBIS……one gets to feel the pulse of products for the season.

As Creative Director and co-founder of Design Works International in NYC, a lifestyle studio for the home and fashion markets…this season my global greats are textile treasures…

The diversity in textile patterns with technique updates this season are fresh and fun because we are seeing a great mix of printing techniques, embroidery and appliqué work! Each textile collection has a personality of its own making this seasons “global greats” true treasures!
Classic Home in LA showing off their”Artisan Blue” ensemble with the perfect mix of techniques giving this collection a well balanced selection of diversified looks for top of bed! Las Vegas Market January.

From Esta Home  in Spain….this millennial mix of textiles is on-trend with its succulent pattern and homage to 1950 flamingos! Heimtextil Frankfurt January.

Karma Living from Livington NJ is all about global mixing from various countries that support the artisan culture. Spotted these at the Las Vegas Market in January.

Bliss Studio captures classic in a fresh and trend right fashion at The Las Vegas Market in January.

Brewster Home stepped outside the box when designing this fashion forward wallcovering spotted at Heimtextil in January.

Muller Textiles also stepped out of the box at Heimtextil with this “hip” and updated bedding ensemble geared toward the melennial market.

Graphic Greats from the Trend Hall at Heimtextil…love the creative pillow trim in contrast orange!
My tried and true textile haven, ABC Home in NYC with this beaded ikat inspired masterpiece!

Neon in the Night-VEGAS STYLE

Well..I will never look at neon lights the same way after my night time tour at The Neon Museum located at 770 Las Vegas Blvd N in Las Vegas.

This 501c (3) organization was established in 1996 to help preserve the history of these tell tale lights. The hour tour is filled with Vegas history including tidbits from the Rat Pack days, Bugsy Siegel and downtown Vegas trivia.

Spend a visual hour learning about the history of neon, the designers that created them, font type specifics and leave with a different understanding about Vegas….lots of color, a little bit of chaos (past history) but mostly the creativity that these lights stood for!

Purple Power in Products at Heimtex in Frankfurt Germany.

We often talk about trend and what is happening in the future, but today I like to review what is happening on the product end of design regarding print, pattern and color at Heimtex.

Heimtex is the largest international textile show with manufacturers, designers and mills from 68 countries. The fair is a 4 day event located in Frankfurt Germany and takes place at the Messe Exhibition Hall.

Products ranges are tabletop, wallpaper, upholstery, bedding and fabric for both the residential as well as contract industries.

This show I found purple and tones of purple to be the universal color connector through many product ranges. Purple, plum, wine and eggplant were prevalent as main colors or accent tones alongside neutral grounds.

Casamance-Abstract geometric patterns in large scale repeats with imperfect edges.  Lokser Textiles-Hand painted naive styled damasks.

Brewster-Organic floral patterns with geometric accents.
Pichler-Purple as a solid color statement.

Design Works International-Fun hand painted florals and medallions with textural accents.

Trend Hall Fabric-Artisan techniques like ombré, shibori and tie dye.

Pantone Rose Quartz Trending at Heimtex in Germany

Posting from Heimtex, the largest international textile show, in Frankfurt Germany this week. Great to get an overview of art and product from around the globe in one location that focuses on all interior soft-home trends in textiles, wallpaper, upholstery and tabletop..just to name a few categories.

Happy to confirm that Pantone Rose Quartz 13-1520, paired with gray or taupe for a more unisersal look is trending at Heimtex. Shown here from Almeida and Pichler with updated faux fur and fun textures!

Collaborating Style with GAF

Design Works International's avatarDesign Works Intl

Honored to be working along side GAF on the re-launch of their GAF Style Guide on GAF.com Our focus is the lifestyle shift of “bringing the indoors, outdoors”, a trend in home design today!

Founded in 1886, GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. The company’s products include a comprehensive portfolio of steep-slope and commercial roofing systems, which are supported by an extensive national network of factory-certified contractors.

The new GAF Style Guide is a resource that helps homeowners select shingles that best match their personal style with their exterior home portfolio.

The style guide can be found at http://www.gaf.com/style.

In today’s world, we have seen a major lifestyle shift in “bringing the indoors, outdoors” so a paramount design decision like choosing the color and substrate of your roof is now being influenced by your lifestyle. Color as well as texture are factors to consider while making this…

A Kid For A Day at “Kind + Jugend” in Cologne Germany!

Hard to recall the last time I felt like a kid for a day…so thank you Kind + Jugend for showcasing some of the best international kids products in Cologne Germany this week!

Great to see such innovative and creative products taking center stage for 2016! The color story was varied from “the softer side” creating a more vintage sensibility to a more “bold and bright” geometric style for a more outgoing sensibility.

Serba displayed knitted 3-D character dolls on an updated scenic printed bed set.

Keoka’s take was more of a mid century modern changing table that had us all at hello…dreaming of how we could use this piece even if our kids were full grown!

Tede from Berlin had the most amazing wooden toy animated bikes in beautiful dye based finishes creating some of the nicest color palettes that we viewed at the show.

Dip Dap from Lativa had a more modern take on a toddler bike made of digitally printed wood with a repeated bear motif.

3 Sprouts from Canada represented by Duux went for a more graphic oversized character approach on home decor fabric storage containers.

Kids 11, a client of mine located in Atlanta debuted many new innovative toy and gear offerings along with their new packaging and logo update.

Tuc Tuc from Spain was truly a trend setter with there newest black and white geometric strollers!

ChildHome had one of the most curated and fresh looking booths at the show for color, style and substrates! Look at this cute fabric tent!

Neo NATO had a fun graffiti wall display outside their booth.

Green Tom had the coolest all organic and green strollers made from post consumer recycled products….so innovative and refreshing!

Camarelo had the most graphic splatter print stroller in black, orange, green with accents of blue.

TwistShake is extremely innovative with there colorful and multi-functional bottles and containers!
